Social and Economic Expenditures

Social and economic expenditures refer to contributions made by extractive companies to support local development and social projects, in line with EITI Requirement 6.1. The EITI Standard promotes transparency in social payments and transfers, encouraging disclosure of the amounts, recipients, and significance of these contributions, even when reconciliation is not possible.

These contributions may be made in cash or in-kind and typically include investments in healthcare, education, road infrastructure, market gardening, agricultural development, and grants to local communities.

While Zambia has no legal or contractual obligations mandating social payments, voluntary contributions from mining companies were included in the 2022 EITI scope through unilateral disclosure.
