The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is the global standard for good governance in the oil, gas and mining sectors. Promotes Transparency and Accountability in the management of natural resources. ZEC Council plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency, accountability and collaboration in Zambia’s extractive sector, aligning with the EITI Standard to promote good governance and sustainable resource management.
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is the global standard for transparency and accountability in the oil, gas and mining sectors, and supports national stakeholders in implementing extractive sector reforms. By promoting collaboration in multi-stakeholder groups, data and debate can be leveraged to strengthen extractive sector governance.
The EITI Standard is the global benchmark for transparency and accountability in the oil, gas, and mining sectors. As a framework for disclosure and multi-stakeholder oversight, the EITI Standard is designed to empower governments, industry and civil society to promote understanding of natural resource management; strengthen public and corporate governance and accountability; and provide the data to inform policymaking and debate.
Zambia has a long history of mining. Mining is the mainstay of the economy of Zambia. That is why the country joined the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in July 2008 at a workshop organized by the government.
The objective of the workshop was to raise stakeholder awareness (namely: government, mining companies, and civil society) and to reach consensus on the introduction of EITI in Zambia. This included the establishment of the Zambia EITI Council (ZEC), drafting of the costed work plan for Zambia, and the appointment of a senior government official to lead the Zambia EITI Council. Since then, the Zambia EITI Council and the Zambia EITI Secretariat have been established.
The main objective of ZEITI is to disclose data and information ranging from the Regime and Fiscal policies governing Zambia’s mining sector to revenues generated from the extractive industry. The purpose of disclosing this information is to promote transparency and accountability in the use of the use of the country’s natural resources.
Currently, the Council is chaired by the Secretary to the Treasury under the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, with a Vice-Chairperson selected from civil society organisations. By fostering transparency, EITI strengthens accountability in Zambia’s extractive sector, ensuring that resource wealth benefits all citizens.
